A four-season travel destination that offers both rural and urban vacations, Wisconsin owes much of its popularity to its natural beauty and waterways. Wisconsin is home to two Great Lakes: Superior and Michigan, as well as the world’s most famous river, the Mississippi, and 15,000 inland lakes.

In spring and summer, travelers enjoy the water by fishing, sailing and canoeing or the land by golfing on the best natural golf course landscape in the country. With 46 state parks and 12 state and national forests, the fall offers spectacular scenic touring while the winter lends itself to cross-country and downhill skiing, dog sled races and snowmobiling.

Wisconsin is rich in urban experiences. Milwaukee attractions offer performing arts, professional sports teams, ethnic festivals, nationally-acclaimed zoo and natural history museum, fine restaurants and shopping. Madison, the state’s capital, features the Capitol building, beautiful University of Wisconsin campus and bustling atmosphere.

Wisconsin’s rural and forested areas await nature and adventure lovers. With 250 miles of shoreline, five state parks and 10 lighthouses, visit Door County, often called the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.” Or escape to private cottages, hotels, resorts and outdoor recreation at Wisconsin’s Northwoods, a spectacular wooded area attractions full of lush forests, sparkling lakes and rushing rivers. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore at Wisconsin’s northern tip is a scenic chain of 21 islands where visitors enjoy kayaking, sailing and fishing, performing arts, shopping and fine dining

According to my spanking new GPS, I am nowhere. Literally. I am in a place that does not exist, for the second time in as many days. Door County, Wisconsin, with roughly 300 miles of coastline and quaint New Englandy towns, may be one of the most visible targets when it comes to getaways. But there are pockets that remain elusive, that confound even the latest in supposedly fail-proof technology.

To vanish into nowhere (“Not Found” in the blunt parlance of personal navigation devices), you first have to follow Wisconsin’s crooked-finger peninsula north toward the tip to Ellison Bay. Pass through the tiny fishing town off the main tourist track, follow Porcupine Road to Ellison Bluff Road, and then keep going, even though driving down this narrow, rough stretch of back street feels like one long wrong turn. Ellison Bluff Road ends abruptly in a glen just steps away from a view that’s the stuff of dreams—perhaps even nightmares.

Picture an eagle’s nest made of metal and bolted into the side of a sheer cliff. This is what Ellison Bluff County Park offers. There, a short hike beyond the end of the barely paved road, only a small steel boardwalk attached to the crumbly-edged bluff stands between you and the violently churning waters of Green Bay hundreds of feet below. If you fall, you might indeed be Not Found.

Winter is in full spring in February and in Wisconsin. The state, however, has many events that take place throughout the month that are worth checking out whether you are looking for a day out of the house or for a family vacation. The Fish Creek Winter Festival is an annual winter festival that is held in Fish Creek. The event includes a chili cook-off to keep you warm including sleigh rides, kids obstacle courses, treasure hunts, snowshoe dance contests, a bike toss and bed races. This event is held over two weekends.

The Hot Air Affair is held in Hudson every year. Here you can see more than 50 hot air balloons from across the nation launch for a race over the St. Croix Valley. More than 20,000 visitors gather to watch and a torchlight parade features balloon pilots and crews light up the night with fire from their baskets. The Apostle Island Sled Dog race is held annually in Bayfield. The race features 100 teams of 6 to 8 dogs that race across the scenic landscape of the Apostle Islands for a $5,000 purse. There are two main races. One race is an 80 mile 8 dog race and the other is a 60 mile 6 dog race. There is also a 20 miles sportsman’s race, a 16 and under race as well as a 10 mile family race.

The Christmas Mountain Village Carnival features the nations largest sled-dog weight-pull. The dogs compete for a ton of dog food. Teams from all over the US travel to compete. They also have other activities including winter golf, sleigh rides, sled dog races, turkey bowling, chili cook-off, live entertainment, wood splitting contests and fireworks, held at the Christmas Mountain Village in Wisconsin Dells. The Snowflake Continental Cup International Ski Jumping tournament is held in Westby annually. This tournament includes the top US and foreign skiing competitors competing on the 114-meter hill.

In Eagle River you will find the Annual Klondike Days. This is the nation’s largest winter festival that features a variety of events including dog and horse weight pulls, The Great Northern Lumberjack Competition, chainsaw log carvings, Klondike Craft Show, dog sled rides for kids, and Native American programs. It is all held in an authentic 18th century voyager encampment. More than 15,000 people attend the event each year. All of the event personnel are dressed in authentic clothing from the time period.

Door County is a great northern Wisconsin option if you enjoy the water sports that are plentiful in this area. Fishing is always the most popular option, but there are other choices including sailing, scuba diving, parasailing, or simply relaxing on the beach at one of the nearby state parks. The area is also steeped in tradition, and you can learn about its fascinating history at any of the numerous museums and historical attractions around town. However, to really take in Door County, visit Washington Island and travel around the island via the Cherry Train to get close to the most interesting cultural and culinary attractions.

When you arrive in the Door Peninsula, the area draws you in with its simple, yet dramatic outdoor beauty. The towering cliffs that descend into Lake Michigan are your first clue that the outdoors truly matter here, and the lush vegetation and abundant wildlife are around every corner, beckoning you to explore outside of the typical tourist draws. To get the most out of this scenic wonderland, visit the Ridges Sanctuary to see and learn more about the biological diversity of the area. Or, if you would rather take it all in for yourself, make your way to one of the town or county parks for breathtaking views of the area’s exceptional natural features.

When you venture further north to Minocqua, outdoor excursions become even more of a staple for the ideal vacation experience. With over 3,200 lakes, ponds, and streams in the greater Minocqua area, leading to the appropriate title the “Lakeland Area,” water activities are definitely the biggest allure. Rent a boat and feel the refreshing mist on your face, or take to the always popular fishing and reel in walleye, musky, northern pike, smallmouth bass, perch, and a lot more. Head out to the trails for some solitude as you hike or bike among the plentiful vegetation and numerous animals that call this area home. No matter what outdoor activity floats your boat or canoe, there is certainly a pristine hideaway just waiting for you to discover it.

One truly exceptional place to take in the flavor of northern Wisconsin is the Hayward area. Here, you will find the Lumberjack World Championships each summer and the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame, each pointing to a popular outdoor pursuit that identifies the real culture of this area. The towns are classically northern, as visitors flock here each summer to stroll the small town streets in search of fudge and to relax on the unsoiled beaches. It is the perfect retreat for anyone looking to escape a hurried, hectic lifestyle and learn what it means to let the day occur naturally.

No matter which part of northern Wisconsin you plan to visit, your day will certainly be filled with an exciting outdoor adventure in the forests or on the lakes. To get the most out of your trip, stay within your natural surroundings in a Northern Wisconsin cabin rental. With the water a short walk out the back door, you can head to the beach whenever the lake beckons and take a midday nap in the comfort of your bed if the fresh air tires you out. The fully-stocked kitchen makes it easy to prepare the fish you caught during the day, which you can enjoy on your deck surrounded by towering maple and pine trees. Relax and listen to the music of the birds, this really is your vacation to escape from it all.

One of the best locations to visit is the Menominee River, especially around Marinette, Wisconsin. Here, the walleye begin to bite about four days after the slack off at the lower Fox River, about mid spring. It’s about an hour’s drive north of the popular Fox River location, but it’s worth taking advantage of, especially since there are seasons where the good catch only lasts a couple of days. After that, Wisconsin walleye fishing may be dead for another year. During the run at the Menominee River, you’ll find that the walleye move quickly from the mouth of Green Bay to the Hattie Street dam, and you’ll need a boat to find any kind of consistency; this is because they first stay near the edges of the ice in the waters of Green Bay. However, as they move inland, you may want to cast your boat aside and wade in knee-deep or simply cast out from shore.

The Wisconsin River provides more excellent fishing. This river has tons of dams between the Grandfather and Grandmother Dams in the north and the Prairie du Sac Dam at the lower end of Lake Wisconsin. Walleye fishing is extremely productive at and around these dams, most of which offer shore access to the river for excellent fishing opportunities. One of the best stretches of good walleye fishing here is between the dam at Wisconsin Dells in the north and Pine Island, especially just southwest of Portage, where you’ll find points to fish off a levee road in the Pine Island State Wildlife area. There is also a great little black eddy on the south side of the river near Hillside Drive that gives up a great catch of walleye.

The beautifully diverse state of Wisconsin is crossed with beautiful and scenic rivers frequented by both kayakers and canoeists, as well as those enjoying a day of tubing, rafting, or just relaxing on the river. With more than 40 rivers for kayaking and canoeing, it is no wonder the whitewater kayaking in Wisconsin is some of the best in the nation. This brief guide will cover some of the best whitewater kayaking spots in Wisconsin. The Bad River, winding through northern Wisconsin, offers more than 40 miles of whitewater for kayaking and rafting. Beginning at Devil’s Gate footbridge in Ashland County, intermediate whitewater kayakers can brave class I through III rapids for 18.8 miles of scenic, mountainous views before ending at Elm Hoist Road. Another popular stretch of the Bad River for advanced whitewater kayaking also begins at Devil’s Gate footbridge and boasts 6.2 miles of class III-V rapids, as well as breathtaking views of the Gogebic Range in Wisconsin.

The Montreal River, passing through Iron and Gogebic Counties in Wisconsin, offers 40 miles of whitewater kayaking for paddlers of all experience levels. The Erickson Road to Saxon Falls Dam section of the Montreal River is a relaxing 16.7 mile paddle with class I and II rapids, perfect for beginners or to warm up for the highly difficult western fork of the river. The challenging western branch of the Montreal River features class II through V rapids and several waterfalls for an ultimate whitewater kayaking experience. There are plenty of majestic rivers that offer outstanding whitewater kayaking in Wisconsin, from a refreshing paddle down the east fork of the Chippewa River to the heart-stopping rapids of the Potato River. Several of Wisconsin’s whitewater rivers are perfect for multiple day kayak trips. Plan ahead and make the necessary preparations for overnight camping along the river and remember a durable, lightweight camping tent like the Coleman Exponent Krypton 2 that comfortably sleeps two and weighs less than 8 pounds.

Escaping for a romantic weekend getaway in Wisconsin state? If it’s relaxing accommodation away from the kids you want, perhaps with luxury and pampering thrown in, there are plenty of hotels, cabins and resorts designed with couples in mind. You may never want to leave the suite when you see the whirlpool, private deck, and roaring open fire. Make sure you choose activities you will both enjoy. There is no point heading for the Wisconsin ski slopes if you are a snow boarding enthusiast but your partner can barely stand up in the snow. This is a romantic getaway. You should be spending more time with each other not less.

Wisconsin does offer an exceptional range of activities for lovers of the great outdoors. From biking to fishing, horseback riding to golf, almost every hobby is catered for. If you prefer to enjoy the natural attractions Wisconsin offers without breaking a sweat then how about a relaxing picnic at Devil’s Lake, Baraboo or a light lunch and wander through one of the many scenic harbor towns? Foodies will be in their element in Wisconsin. Time your romantic getaway to coincide with one of the many festivals and you could savor the Wisconsin State Fair Cream Puff, all things “strawberry” at Cedarburg’s Strawberry Festival, or fine French cuisine at Milwaukee’s Bastille Day.
